It was just a beautiful hike up South Moat and Middle Moat Mtns. along Moat Mtn. Trail. I bailed on my original plan for Crawford Path; it's been so long, but I only go up there on bluebird days. It was socked in over the Presidentials, but bright and sunny points south, so I opted for Moat Mtn. Trail.

The trail was partially broken by two hikers who started some time earlier today. Another party started hiking just behind me so I decided to let them pass. Their dog, Jasper, came ahead of them and greeted me. I rubbed his ears until they caught up and passed with freindly greetings. Off they went, then I enjoyed the track under warm, clear skies.

Awhile later as I hiked along in my state of happiness, I heard a noise and looked to my left as Jasper came flying at me from my left, off-trail, growling, and was quickly at my feet. He appeared ready to bite. I'm pretty good with dogs, and I put my hand down and talked to him, then I rubbed his ears again, then he jetted ahead and out of sight. Alrightythen!

I was soon hiking in just a t-shirt. Yes!!! Sunny and warm!

Up near treeline, I started to see the beautiful sculptures in the snow made by the recent storm.

Up on the summit of South Moat Mtn., I decided it was a good choice of trails because the Presidentials were still socked in with clouds, but here it was sunny and windless.

On the summit of South Moat Mtn., the guys who owned Jasper, the pit bull mix type dog, were swilling beer. Jasper came running up to me and again I rubbed his ears. Then he backed off and growled at me again. This is one strange dog. I joked to the owners about their unleashed dog and continiued taking pictures, as Jasper ran around the summit. As I passed, Jasper came back at me growling again. I kept walking past, then Jasper came right up close, growling and menacing. I looked at the beer-swilling owners of the dog with a blank stare. They called the dog. I continiued walking past and taking pictures. Then Jasper came running up behind me again and bit me on my leg. I spun around, Jasper retreated and the idiots called their dog again. I looked at them again with a blank WTF! look, and one said "sorry about that". They didn't express any concern that I had been bitten. They never leashed the dog. I turned and continiued walking past as I put my hand on my "equalizer", which I can draw really fast! A moment later, Jasper came running at me again, growling and looking to bite. He stopped about one foot from me. That's how far from death Jasper was today. But he didn't bite me again, so he didn't die. The grunts were oblivious to reality. Big surprise.

Beyond South Moat summit, the trail was unbroken as I wandered around the open spaces and found a peaceful spot to eat lunch and catch some rays, away from the grunts.

I actually caught a slight suntan! Everywhere, there were beautiful sculptures in the snow from the winds, which were now only a memory.

Another beautiful day in heaven :)

Forest- Tremendous images. Looks like you had a perfect-weather-day in the mountains.... Your tale of the pitbull was unbelievable. I don't know how I would have handled the same situation. Scarey for sure. I love dogs but they clearly need to be under control at all times. I think I would have had a few words with the dogs owner. Could this be considered a criminal offense?

Thanks,

I love all animals. The dog incident was a very temporary bummer. I'm thankful it went no further than it did, no need for conflict with ill-behaved humans or dog. I was able to retain my wonderful mood. But, there are many people who would literally suffer a heart attack if they were in that situation. The first bite didn't break skin, but my tendons, muscles and ligaments are too important to allow the dog a second bite.

My day was 99.99% wonderful, and it was my first hike with my new 36" Tubbs snowshoes, which worked very well :D

Happy Trails :)

forestgnome, you displayed more courage than I could have, in that situation. Out of curiousity, what were you referriing to as your "equalizer"?

This is very special to me. I found the antler on Mt. Chocorua close to where I witnessed (almost) two bulls rutting. A local old-timer made it for me. It stays sheathed inside my camera bag. I hope I never have to use it any yucky way. It has spirit.

Happy Trails :)

forestgnome, great photos. Very cool how you handle the dog incident. Like you I love dogs and all animals. However, from your description that dog should be put down or confined. A dog with that temperament is dangerous, hate to think of the dog attacking a child.

forestgnome, nice pictures as always. Glad you had a nice time despite the incident. You have more patience and tolerance than I'll ever have. Personally I don't give a rats tail about jasper or its degenerate owners, and if you had decided to take care of business, they would've deserved every bit of it. But I'm glad you didn't, but only because it would've ruined YOUR day.
