"
The 12-mile line from North River to Newcomb's Tahawus hamlet connects the Saratoga & North Creek Railway with National Lead's titanium-dioxide mines in Tahawus.

The mines closed in 1989, but tailings from the operation can be used to extract rare earth elements, according to National Lead, and there are millions of tons of tailings left from decades of mining since World War II.
"

"The company anticipates hauling 100 million tons of material and tailings from the Tahawus mine.

National Lead says it will take the mining remnants out of the Adirondacks to companies where the tailings can be refined into rare earths used by high-tech and manufacturing companies.
"

"Reconstructing the line, which has deteriorated, will create short-term construction jobs first and long-term jobs when hauling begins and will inject hundreds of thousands of dollars into the local economy every year, Schumer said."
