The Grace Peak Proposal
Dear Fellow climbers,
One of the highest honors that can be bestowed on a person is to name a mountain in their memory...and the Adirondack Mountains have a colorful history of mountain naming.
Please peruse our new website; www.adk46r.org
By clicking on the Grace Peak Icon you will find pertinent information, biographies of Russel M.L. Carson and Grace Hudowalski # 9, historical photos and most importantly instructions on how you can help.
Russ Carson may have authored the earliest ADK mission statement. In a letter to Robert Marshall, December 16, 1923 he wrote.
"In all of our thinking about recreational development, we ought constantly to remember that wilderness and natural beauty are the real charm of the Adirondacks, and that preservation is as much our objective as helping more people to share our joy in them.”
Grace Hudowalski #9 also believed that teaching people to love the highpeaks was the surest way to protect them. She was right! Today the 46ers are strong advocates for the proper use of wilderness everywhere. We are volunteers who donate thousands of hours to the trails and to the people who use them.
Join the Grace Peak Committee and the 46ers. We have been quietly working toward this ambitious goal: having two of the High Peaks formally renamed – East Dix as Grace Peak in memory of Grace Hudowalski , and South Dix as Carson Peak in memory of Russell Carson. We believe – and many agree with us – that these individuals fully merit such a high honor.
We are seeking letters of support. We encourage you to send a signed letter indicating in your own words your support. On the new website we have offered a couple of example letters for your use.
Please mail your letter of support to:
