“The Humps” . . . what an intriguing name! If you look on many maps, you’ll see a peak named “The Humps” which lies nearly due east of Mt. Martha (on Cherry Mountain). Although “The Humps” was not our primary destination, it’s one of the places that Zman and I visited today.

Our primary goal was to do some trail work on the Martha’s Mile trail, and to visit the two peaks at either end of this trail, i.e. Mt. Martha and Owl’s Head. But, more about that later!

After accomplishing our primary goal, we had plenty of time to do some bushwhack exploration. I’d heard that it was a short and easy bushwhack to “The Humps” along a spur ridge that leads off Cherry Mountain’s main ridge. Say no more! Off we went! We were not expecting any blockbuster views since we knew that minimal “through the trees” views was about the best that could be hoped for.

Well, the hike certainly lived up to its reputation of being a short and easy whack. However, despite some poking around at various spots, the minimal “through the trees” views were indeed very minimal:(. This prompted Zman to remark that perhaps we were “looking for views in all the wrong places” (a take-off on Wayon Jennings song entitled “Lookin’ for Love in All the Wrong Places). His remark generated the title of this Trip Report.

Since the weather was deteriorating rapidly, we gave up our quest to find some better “minimal views”. Below is a photo of the best view we got from “The Humps”. Besides there being a lot of trees in the way, the overcast sky contributed to the poor viewing.

Although the views were minimal, the moose must love it out there on that remote ridge leading to “The Humps”. There's plenty of hobble-bush for them to munch on, and the place is carpeted with moose poop!

OK, enough about “The Humps”! As indicated in an earlier Trip Report, one of my adopted trails is Martha’s Mile which is the 0.8 mile trail that runs along the the main ridge of Cherry Mountain and serves to connect Mt. Martha and Owl’s Head. In our usual “loosey-goosey” fashion, Zman & I finally decided to get on the road at about 10:30 A.M. and hike to Cherry Mountain. Zman agreed to lend a hand with the trail work, and I’m grateful to him for that. Thanks again Zman!

The hike up the Cherry Mountain Trail to Martha’s Mile went fine. That trail is in excellent condition! Kudos to the Train Maintainer for that trail! Our trail work on Martha’s Mile went smoothly, and we finished up our work on the Owl’s Head summit. We had just enough time to get a few photos from there before the clouds started to thicken. And, as anyone knows who has been to this spot, there are views in all directions. But perhaps the most dramatic are the easterly views towards the Presidentials and the adjacent Randolph valley. Below are a couple of photos.

So, even though we might have been “looking for views in all the wrong places” on our trek to The Humps, we had still a great day. And, we found it quite amazing that we were able to accomplish so much in just under 7 hours.

For anyone interested in more “Humps” info, below are two more pictures.

Below is a photo taken on a prior visit to Owl’s Head on Cherry Mountain. It shows a portion of the ridgeline where “The Humps” reside.

Below is a map showing the location of “The Humps” in relation to some other landmarks, such as Mt. Martha, etc.
