I'm re-reading Backwoods Ethics, and I had forgotten what a sense of humor the Watermans wrote it with. Case in point. Here are a few selections from a section called " Thratchett's Axioms on Winter Hiking and camping."

6. If a trip requires n hours, there will be n-1 hours of daylight.

17. To set a compass course, first walk where you want to go, then plot your course.

21. Speed of travel in winter is best estimated in less-familiar units- for example, furlongs per fortnight.

28. Ice will give way only after repeated testing has demonstrated it will support body weight.

and #50. Bad trips make good stories.

Anyhow, very funny read! I wonder why I forgot all the humor....
