Of course, I'm locked in my office, looking out at a blue sky, dreaming of being on top of something tall and steep with the same clear sky. And so I'm living vicariously through all the trail reports. It's wet up there.

But should really be on some of these trails right now? Running water, mud, aren't these signs to wait for things to dry out? And who among us sticks to the muddy rut and never braids the edges of the trail? (To quote Dewey Cox: "I'm guilty as charged!")

Just probing for some philosophical responses here.

I try to avoid hiking when the conditions are like what you describe. There is almost always an alternative though. It might involve some travel, or lower elevations, but that does not bother me.
