Trails: Avalon, A-Z, Tom Spur, Willey Range, Avalon, Avalon Spur, Cascade Loop
The trails are all in good condition. They were mostly dry although there was a fair bit of water on the upper section of Avalon. The wet slabs on Avalon were mostly rough in texture and offered a fairly good grip.
There are several stream crossings all of which were easy today.
Most of the time in the Whites I'm of the opinion that the trails are better in the winter than in the summer and that would be the case for most of this loop, but the upper section of Avalon is one place that is definitely easier in the summer--no out of control slides down the slope.
From Lauky's perspective: There was enough water throughout the loop for him to hydrate himself. This is also a very easy hike for dogs presenting no particular difficulties except perhaps for a couple of ledges on Avalon which for most dogs won't present any problems. Lauky is getting used to being mistaken for Atticus and he doesn't mind it at all, he loves the attention.
We did the loop in a counter clockwise direction and saw no one throughout the hike today until we reached Avalon. We then started running into folks. A number of people were heading up with no pack and almost no water obviously just going to Avalon. That's where you get the best views anyway. We took the short cascade loop on the way back. It also is in good condition with very little erosion.
Mileage: 7.2
Elevation gain: about 2800'
