Date of Hike: 3/8/2009
Trail Conditions:
Avalon trail to A-Z trail: A packed sidewalk, for the most part, though postholed in places. Water crossings still solid.
A-Z trail, Mt. Tom spur, Willey Range trail to Field: Excellent snowshoe track all the way up to the summits of Tom and Field.
Willey Range trail to Willey: Apparently, this section of the trail has not seen a lot of use over the past few days, or perhaps had drifted in. It's now packed. Please disregard the many snowshoe tracks right below the Willey summit cone, as I lost the trail for a moment and had to wander around a bit...
Avalon trail to the A-Z junction: Starts off lovely, and then becomes increasingly postholed as one approaches Avalon. The steep section from Avalon to the junction itself is just riddled with postholes, but not at all icy.
Special Equipment Required: Snowshoes
Comments: What a fine day to be out on the Willey Range. I chose to tackle Tom first, knowing that the weather conditions were supposed to improve as the day went on... and was I glad that I did! The views from both Willey and Avalon were just spectacular. An excellent way to spend a Sunday afternoon after a tough hike the day prior.
