Well I searched for a good forecast yesterday and found one that said "Showers ending after midnight, cloudy early then clearing."

Guess what? SPOT ON!!!

Had a great trip flying solo for a change and knocked off three more 4ks (can I count Field twice? :D) but the best views of the day were from Avalon.

Did the usual loop up Avalon, A-Z to the Tom Spur, Willey Range trail out to Willey and back to Field then drop back down the Avalon.

I know I did the altitude no matter which way, but I'm damn glad I didn't do it in the reverse order. The Avalon trail is relentlessly steep, wet, rooty and rocky. Wasn't so bad going down.

Skies cleared to patchy clouds by the time I hit Willey where I met a large family group that had come up the Ethan Pond side and included a four and three year old in their number!

The four year old had hiked the whole distance. The three year old only did the fun steep parts and wanted to be carried on the flat bits "Because they are boring" :)

Despite all the rain the stream crossings were no trouble. There was enough water running to make a detour on the cascade loop worth while on the way down.

I'll have more words for sure and a bunch of pics up on the web sometime tomorrow.

I hope you all found the same forecast I did and had equally great days out.

The pics from this trip are up. Just more waffle to finsh, but I'm sure most of you skip that anyway :)

Can find the pics starting HERE.

Great pictures Bob! I especially liked your panorama experient... if I just had one of those with little labels of what mountain is what, I might be able to indentify things when I see them.

If you had a superzoom lens, you probably could have seen Dave & I on the summit of Webster from the Willey outlook... the timing was about right. :)

Congrats on being almost halfway through the 4Ks!

Nice pics and report ... This was my exact trip for my first hike in the Whites (though we had placed a second car below Willey, and then locked the keys for safekeeping in our first car!! Luckily we figured it out early in the hike...)

I had the exact same conditions, and yes, Avalon was the highlight of that day for me too. Nice little peak.

I'd like to re-do these on a nice day. After driving up to the Whites Friday after work and sleeping in the car, we did a death'march on Saturday. Got up early on Sunday, and then ran up these 3 peaks. Legs tired, not great weather, followed by a 5 hour car ride home. There's lots of peaks in NH I'd like to do over with more time, better weather and less driving.
