We began and ended our hike at the Crawford Station, took Avalon Tr to A-Z Tr. Water crossings easy and trail was dry but we lacked sunshine. Spur Tr to Mount Tom felt shorter than usual. Nice log benches to sit on on Tom's lookout but the cloud coverage was hiding even the other side of the Notch.
Willey Range Tr to Field was dry, very nice and wide. We passed over Field and continued directly to Willey. Enjoyed the lookout and ate lunch and enjoyed passing openings looking down into the Notch.
Then backtracked on Willey Range Tr to Feild. A very large AMC group that we had passed on the trail earlier was lingering on the summit. One man would be finishing his 4,000 footer list when he reached Tom. They went left and we went right descending down the Avalon Trail. Trail is steep but dry and fair footing.
Near the end we entered an unmarked spur (Right)to Crawford Brook see a small flume, spur quickly connects back to the Avalon Trail and then in a short distance we took the marked Cascade Loop. Beecher Cascades were running fulll and were very lovely.
All trails in excellent condition.
No special equipment was needed.
