Anyone have any beta about the stream crossings on these 2 trails for a planned hike tomorrow, July 22, 2008 (Tuesday)? Couldn't find current conditions on the trail conditions forum and there's been a lot of rain here in southern NH; wonder how it is up north.

Thanks, much appreciated. DocRoss

Lot of rain up in Gorham, I has eom excavation done last thursday and the watertable was below the hole depth of 6 feet. As of today, the ground water is up to about to 3' deep. This indicates the ground is saturated which means any rain that falls in the next few days will be running right down the rivers and steams. If we get rain overnight, it could be interesting.

I can't speak to North Twin, but I came down Gale River on Sunday during the deluge and while the water was running a bit high at the crossings, it was nothing we couldn't rock-hop if you're wearing boots (it might be high enough to let water into low-tops)

This is what the Pemi looks like: Pemi on USGS . The crossings of the Gale may be a bit lower than this report but it looks challenging to dangerous by the shear volume of water. You can skip the crossings on the North Twin trail with a little bushwhacking. If you do choose this option I would beat my way up to the ridge line and then follow the river up until you hit the trail to North Twin. It is much easier going on the ridge than down by the river. If you look at the chart you will notice that the real flood water did not come down until well into the night. Any new rain will certainly swell the streams quickly.
Be careful out there.

yep, can't say how it is now, but crossings were no problem on the 13th.

Pemi/Gale

2 different watersheds. What may be true for the Pemi may not be true for Gale. That said, there has been a lot of rain, expect Gale to be high, too. The Ammonoosuc drains a similar watershed on the northwest side of the mountains. Info here:

Skip the first 2 crossings on the North Twin Trail by staying on the east bank. The book says bushwhack but it is a very discernible path. This brings you to the 3rd crossing which is the easiest of the 3. There is an "island" here to get across. If you don't see it, I wouldn't try it.

Thanks for the info

Thanks to all for replying. Sounds like there could be a problem tomorrow! We may go to Plan B...
