The Long Trail crosses the (closed) road through Smugglers Notch just after the upper ski area parking lot. You can hike up to the summit of Mansfield (the Chin) that way. There's a loop that takes you across the ridge and down through the ski area, but I wouldn't recommend it while Stowe is still operating. As it is, the Long Trail goes up through Chin Clip Glades which will have lots of skiers so keep your eyes open.

If you are driving from I-89 to Stowe will go right by the Green Mountain Club Headquarters. Check them out for much more info. Most popular hikes immediately out of Stowe area: Stowe Pinnacle, Mt. Hunger and the above discussed Mt Mansfield. An easier hike from the area is Nebraska Notch from Lake Mansfield. Camel's Hump is another gem about 1/2 hour drive south of Stowe (when you get off of I-89, go south & west instead of north). Have fun.

I hiked the Stowe Pinnacle last year at this time and highly recommend it. You should definitely bring snowshoes. It's about a 2 hour round trip and has an excellent view from the top. You could also just hike up the Mountain Rd. into Smuggler's Notch.
