Starting from the Caps Ridge Trail, Z-man and I did a trek on The Link trail between Caps Ridge and the Castle Trail. This was done partly for red-lining purposes, and partly out of morbid curiosity to determine if this segment of trail is as rugged “as advertized”. The WMG indicates that this segment of trail has “countless treacherous roots, rocks, and hollows that are very tricky and tedious to negotiate”.
On a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being most rugged), this segment of The Link would maybe rank as an 8 or 9 for a regular hiking trail, but perhaps only as a 1 or 2 for a bushwhack!! But, that being said, this segment of trail is in good shape considering what the original trail builders had to work with in the very rugged terrain on the flank of Mt. Jefferson.
After arriving at the Castle Trail, Z-man and I rewarded ourselves by trekking a short distance up the Castellated Ridge on the Castle Trail to get some fine views.
A few photos from this trek (primarily from Castle Trail) are located HERE
