I called the ranger district office in Plymouth to find out about the closing date for the Tripoli road. I got an answering machine so left a message but several days later I have heard nothing. How does one find out when it will close (signs say ‘Nov to May’ but is that Nov. 1 or weather related ?). Is there another place I can call?

A few years ago I went up Tripoli road to the Mt Tecumseh trailhead in Mid-November. That year there was very little snow in the area except what was being made at Waterville Valley. I guess it depends on the weather.

The USFS has recently opened up shop next to Dick Hamilton's White Mountain Attractions place at exit 32 in N. Woodstock. There's a staffed info desk. I don't have the phone number but you might actually get to talk to a person there, who might have a better grip on the Tripoli Rd closure date. It's weather related but sometimes they close in anticipation of winter. Just like someone already took the bear box out of Eliza Brook shelter in anticipation of hibernation and winter weather. (The weather is balmy this afternoon in Franconia and the bears are still out here. From the valley, no sign of snow or ice on the ridge or Lafayette although there's bound to be some in the cold spots.)
