Three feet of unbroken snow (on top of hardpacked snow that went all the way to China) = my first turnaround of 2005. However, this doesn't mean it was one of my most funnest hikes so far -- both up and down.
So we stopped, you can point the finger and laugh but you should have been there with us! 3 feet of snow (on top of already deep snowpack), steep trail, Wampas! It was an absolute gas!
Tom and I luckily had good company. We mostly started out in 4 groups but the 7 of us (Dr. Wu, Tom (Dalraida), Sue, Amy, Rebecca, Riley (the dog!) and Dennis) finally met up when the trail got steep and breakers were needed. I volunteered for the steepest section and cutting through 3 feet of dry powder wasn't really so tiring - it more just took FOREVER! I would slog through the snow for 30 minutes, look up, and be in the SAME DAMN PLACE I was 30 minutes before! I think scientists call this "quasi-static motion" or something like that, I don't know -- I'm not a doctor. Anyway, (you can look at the picture) we reached the Scaur Ridge/Pine Bend Brook Trail Junction Sign (buried) and Tom (hip) and Dennis (time) announced that they were turning back. Since Tom's my partner and I didn't really want to do 700' of additional elevation (in like, 0.5miles) I bailed as well... leaving Sue, Amy and Rebecca to decide if they were going any further that day.
Well, I won't delve into their thought process but they turned back with us as well and we all had a great time either butt sliding (them) or on the Swiss Bobsled (me!!) after that. This was a great hike! The people I got to meet were really cool and it was just great to get out with Tom again. Anyway -- I hope that all present are reading this and chime in and maybe add a few pictures! Here's mine...
