With the forecast for potential showers in the afternoon, Giff and I wanted to get a quick hike in before the rains would be upon us so we decided on the Tripyramids. I picked Giff up at his place near Waterville Valley and a few minutes later we were in the parking lot at Depot Camp putting our shoes on and at about 8:15 headed out.
The air was warm and muggy and with the long road walk, we were soon warmed up. We passed two hikers on the road and three parked bikes at the South Slide trailhead and then we hit the North slide Trail. The lower sections were getting overgrown which added to the primeval forest feeling. Soon we met two hikers who had spent the night up above and had come down the North Slide. One can only wonder why.
The very lower section of the slide was wet and slimy but once we got higher, the slabs dried out and the climbing was wonderful. We passed a group of four (or was it five?) and continued upward. I stopped to take photos of Giff above me as I did not have many photos of the slide with people as a point of reference.
We reached the top of the slide in fine shape but noticed the dark clouds hovering all around us so we moved on. A few minutes later we reached the North summit and noticed how wet the ridge was as compared to the previous parts of the climb. We watched our steps with all the wet roots. I heard some people near the summit but did not see anyone.
We continued along the ridge , passing the Middle and South summits and a few other people along the way. This ridge is another of my favorite walks, the area giving me the feeling of an enchanted forest. The sunlight was intermittently on and off along the ridge, lending a different character to the walk as the bright woods would suddenly go dark. The outlooks near the Middle summit showed us more darks clouds .
We descended the South Slide without incident, watching our steps carefully on the loose scree. The couple we passed on the road was heading up the Slide as was one other couple. The 15 people we had seen was the most people I had seen on the Tripyramids in my seven trips up there. However, that number does not match the hundreds of black and white butterflies that surrounded us on the road walk back to the car.
We reached the car at about 12:15 and ten minutes later it started to rain. Timing is everything in life.
