Tripyramids via Livermore, Mt Tripyramid (up) & Pine Bend Brook (down) Trails - 11/23
Date of Hike: Nov. 23, 2012
Trail Conditions: Of all the post-Sandy hikes I've been on, I noted more damage and litter on all of these trails than all of the others combined. All had numerous blowdowns, especially Livermore Trail -- which had one that completely blocked the trail (walked the trunk length to pass it) -- and between the summits on Mt. Tripyramid Trail where we found another trail-blocker (that one we bushwhacked around). There was also several blowdowns on Pine Bend brook Trail -- one really annoying a crawl-under -- but someone (thanks) has been working on that trail making it as passable as possible without breaking out the big tools. We moved some branches out of the way where we encountered them and could toss them aside. The Mt. Tripyramid Trail's North Slide section had clear ice in a few isolated spots and one thickened ice floe, but all of it was very easy to by-pass. So at least for today, that notorious section is easily doable without breaking out the old mountaineering hat and balls of steel. All crossings were really easy and we did not encounter any icy rocks. While we did see plenty of water on the trail in places down low, most of the mud was frozen and nearly supportive.
Special Equipment Used: Microspikes were not needed, though we did have them just in case. Trekking poles were helpful with balance on the crossing but weren't really needed, per se. Gaiters weren't needed today, either.
Comments: Hiked this one with Bill Robishaud (brobishaud here) and a new friend, Wayne, we met our our recent Hancocks hike. It was a terrific day with mild temps and great views, but the infamous North Slide was the highlight of the day -- a wicked cool scramble it is.
