We didn't want the first winter weekend to get away without a hike and Saturday looked like the better choice for the weather conditions. We parked across the street from the Pine Bend Brook Tail where there were two other vehicles. Started up the trail at 9:00am and 19 degrees. It was spitting freezing rain now and then. The trail was firmly packed and easy to walk. The stream crossings were iced over and thick enough to support our weight. We hit the first steep section in no time and began the steady grunt up. The temperature dropped as we got on top of the ridge. The freezing rain was replaced by small snow flakes blowing around. The section of trail after the scar ridge junction is very interesting with steep slopes on both sides. The ridge walk didn't last long before we were heading up again. And up and up. The wind was waiting for us on North Tripyramid. We didn't see any point in trying to find a better view if the milky white clouds around us. Although the hike up took a bit more effort than I thought it would, we decided to continue to the middle peak. As soon as we climbed into the cull between the peaks the wind was no longer a problem. The hike to Middle Tripyramid was easier than I expected and the views of the clouds were more open. Time to head back. We stopped in the cull between North and Middle to grab a much needed rest and lunch. It always seems steeper on the way down than it does on the way up. The trail was firm enough to hold your boot in place but not so firm to be all ice. It seemed like a long way back to the road and the legs were feeling the 10.2 mile round trip. Back in the car at 3:45pm.
