The trail was hard and glazed pretty much the whole way. Traction selection was challenging. Microspikes or Crampons worked, except stepping off the trail was an immediate post hole. I wore snowshoes most of the way but using them on hard packed crust was tiring. More snow is needed in the Whites!!!
6 of us spanning two generations went on the hike, so we knew that we would end up in two groups. The "Young and Restless" crew consisted of Tom accompanied by two lovely ladies - Jessie and Lexi, followed by the OFG (Old Fat Guy) Patrol where I was supported by Dave and Brian. Since no one seemed to be home at 7 Dwarfs at 7:15AM, we parked on the road down across from the snowmobile trail and schlepped over to the actual trailhead via the snowmobile trail and the end of Haystack road. Weather was about freezing with low clouds and no winds. The first two water crossings were eliminated due to the packed bushwhack. The third water crossing was a little challenging with no snow bridges and icy rocks. Had a great hike up, but had forgot how steep the last slog to N. Twin is so going was a little slow. Summited North a little after 11 and then over to South Twin for a few pics just before noon. The Y&R crew then took off on the way down while the OFG Patrol took it a little easier. Uneventful trip down and were packed up in the car at 3:45PM. I figured that the entire trip was about 14 miles and close to 4K' of elevation gain.
Some sort of traction was necessary and just moderate winter gear otherwise.
