I'm taking a group of young teens up to Unknown Pond in a few days and I'm toying with the idea of taking them up to the peak above the pond one afternoon.

Has anybody been up there from the pond? Is there a herd path? nasty spruce? any views?

Are you referring to the Horn (which is the peak you see from Unknown Pond)? If so, it is a well-established trail with magnificant views.

I should mention the last spur to the summit is very steep, but short. Other than that, it's simple enough.

Not the Horn, although we will be visiting that little gem on our way to Cabot. There is an untrailed peak...I believe it is on the 3000-ftr list...just north of the pond. That's the one I'm considering whacking up with the kids if it isn't too gnarly. I'm hoping someone has some information on it.

OK, gotcha. I have poked around much of the area. There is a lot of hardwoods, which made it easy going, but after the big ice storm a few years back it hasn't recovered. There wasn't much in the line of views that I've been able to find.

Unknown Pond Peak, which is also on the NH 100 Highest list, was a very easy (open) bushwhack back in February, 2003. Don't recall any views. Coming up from Unknown Pond, the take off point is on The Kilkenny Ridge Trail, right after the height of land at an open spot. Should take you about 15 minutes to reach summit. Back in 2003 there was a false register (stated so) about 50 feet before the true summit and register. This is a good B/W for beginners. Good luck.

More of a fern wack than a bushwack, so a nice way to have a first off trail experience for your group!

Thanks everyone! That's the info I was looking for!

Oh and Spongebob...both links blew. Something about access forbidden. Guess I'll have to wait a few days and see the sights with my own eyes.

Links worked today. Nice shots. I'm looking forward to getting up there this weekend.
