No, not a Pulaski or a pruner (neither of which I advocate, much less enjoy, using.) Nor the eye protection that you really ought to be wearing whilst 'whackin'.

I thought in light of Mo's recent revival of his Cascade Trail (Squam Range) thread that I'd point out the fabulous online collection of old New England and NY topo maps. These are old USGS 7.5 minute and 15 minute sheets published on the 'Net by the good folks at the University of New Hampshire. Along with the White Mountains Lost Trails Project and similar resources, these old maps can be a boon in finding old trails, plotting trail-less routes, and otherwise venturing from the beaten, well-signed path.
 
The maps at your link to UNH are a precious resource for me. I've been using them a lot for finding bogs and other terrain features. Also, old abandoned trails are fun to search for.
