Doing recon and research is part of the fun and not something IMO that should be handed to you on a plate from GOOGLE.
I can understand this POV. I even agree as far as the recon and research being fun -- I've done a bunch of hikes this year and have more planned next year ahead of September (when I start my 48 in a month backpacking trips) to test some bushwacks and check other ideas out. But I disagree when it comes to the USFS sites not being at least published on the internet. I can understand not including them in maps if the true intention is to be able to move them at a moments notice. But not including the sites on a published list seems like it's just keeping them for those "in the know" when they are public resources that should be available to everybody. Just my opinion.
