In a departure from my usual Adirondacks/Appalachians trip reports, here's my my trip writeup of this year's instance of our [almost-annual] trip to the canyon country of Southern Utah. This year, we explored two excellent new spots (for us, anyway): Buckskin Gulch and Scorpion Gulch -- Plus a few other spots, too.

Utah 2008 Trip Report

hope you enjoy it!

Nice! I'm jealous...

Next time you visit Capitol Reef, you might find a drive on Burr Trail Road (Boulder to Rte 24) to be a nice half-day. It can be done in a passenger car if the roads are dry and in good shape. Most of the road from Boulder to the edge of the Fold valley was paved, the rest was dirt. My rented Neon only "objected" to one little streambed crossing and only got its teeth rattled on the rest of the road.

I was very interested in seeing your superb photos of Buckskin Gulch, since we backpacked into BG last year, in mid May. We also started at the Wire Pass trailhead but continued to White House by way of Paria Canyon. We encountered fewer and more shallow water pools than your group and were equally enthralled by the beauty of the tall, narrow, chiseled rock faces and rich colors. For comparison, here are some photos of our Buckskin Gulch adventure. Mid-May seems much drier (and hotter) than what you experienced.

Scorpion Gulch looks amazing!

We are investigating the possibility of exploring Grand Gulch in southeastern Utah this coming September.

Phenominal trip report! Pics were great, narrative is great, and I picked up a lot of new places to add to my own Utah to-do list.

I'm out there next month and will be visiting a couple of the places that you did. After seeing your pics, I think I'll press the idea that we really need to do a day-trip into Buckskin!

I also scored two permits to the Wave, which I cannot wait to visit. Have you been to this?

Ah yes - the Wave. Our group was too big for us to even consider going to see it. The maximum group size is 6 (and we were 8). I'll definitely go on some future trip.
