Date of Hike: 1/28 and 1/29/2008
Trail Conditions: Trails in great conditions all around. There are a few blowblowns on the Valleyt Way but are all no-brainers to get around. TRail is well packed to tree line but some traction is needed for the upper steep sections. Above treeline, it's a mix of bare rock, snow and ice. Traction is necessary. Most any form will get you there safely.
Special Equipment Required: I used MSR snowshoes all the way but it would have been easier to switch to something with a smaller footprint on the summit cone. I had crampons but was too lazy to make the switch. I really need to invest in microspikes as they would have been ideal and easy to put on!
Comments: I did this as a 2 day, leaving Appalachia at 2:45 on Monday and getting to the Valley Way platforms just before dark. Took a ligther load to and from Madison before re-packing heading down. My first winter camping and my first backpack of any sort ever. Good time but I'm feeling the effects of the heavy pack!
