I just got back from a week of Vermont peakbagging. During the course of the week I hiked all 5 of Vermonts 4000 footers, 8 of it's 9 NEHH peaks, and a Fifty Finest peak. Papa Bear joined me for 5 of the 7 days. I'm sure he will probably post a more detailed account of some of our adventures... right?
Friday 08-12-05. I left my house in Maine at 5:20 PM and arrived at the Long Trail parking lot on Rt 4 in Vermont at 10:20 PM where I "slept" for the night.
Saturday 08-13-05, Dorsett, & Equinox. After coffee in Rutland I drove south to hike Dorsett Peak (3770'). I left my car at the end of "Town Road" deciding not to try to continue to drive up the 4-wheel drive road. I started hiking at 8:15 following the directions & map posted on Bob & Gerri's site. Thanks again for such great directions! I arrived at the summit canister at 9:55. I left the summit at 10:10, passed by the "door knobs", the firetower barbeque, the winter camp, and was back at the car at 11:18.
As it was a HOT & Muggy day, on my way to Equinox I stopped at the quarry in Dorsett for a cool down swim & lunch.
I arrived in Manchester sometime after noon and fumbled around looking for the parking area and "Blue Trail" that leads to the summit. I started hiking at 12:40. I took the first of many rest breaks at 1:15. The heat, humidity, and relentlessly steep trail was taking it's toll on me. I finally reached the 3848' summit at 2:25 and was greeted by a parking lot full of cars & people who smelled way to clean (or was it I who was way to stinky). On my way down I took the side trail to Lookout Rock with it's great views. I got back to my car at 4:10 and headed straight back to the quarry where I jumped into the water hiking shirt and all! I camped that evening along side FR30 in the GMNF.
Sunday 08-14-05, Mendon/Killington/Pico loop. Woke up this morning to a partly cloudy sky. I drove back through Rutland for coffee and headed over to the Bucklin Trail. Started hiking up the adjacent logging road at 8:00, it was overcast and cloudy. At 8:53, just at the 3rd brook crossing, I heard what I thought was the sound of distant thunder. At 9:05, at the 4th brook crossing, I was in the midst of a thunderstorm. It would rain on and off for the rest of the day. I reached the 3rd cairn at 9:20, and started my bushwack to Mendon from there at 9:40 heading in a SW direction hoping to avoid the thick spruce many post about. My heading brought me to the sag between Little Killington & Mendon Peak. From there I headed uphill N of W soon reaching "the" heard path. I arrived at the 3840' summit at 10:10 and the rain stopped. I left the canister at 10:20 and was back on the logging road at 10:47. Easy!
I continued to follow the logging road up towards the Long Trail / Appalachian Trail. The road narrows, turns into a ATV trail, then finally single track. It was easy to follow. I reached the LT/AT at 11:30 and was on top of Killington (4235') at 11:45. I ate lunch at Cooper Lodge and continued on in the rain to Pico. I reached the 3957' summit at 1:20. I thought it was interesting that the blue blazed trail leading to the summit passes up the stairs and across the side porch of a First Aid - Information building at the top of a ski lift. I was back down to Pico camp at 2:15 and followed the LT/AT back towards Killington reaching the Bucklin Trail at 3:25. From there it was all downhill to my car which I reached at 5:00 PM. I headed into Rutland for the evening.
Monday 08-15-05, Breadloaf & Wilson. Left the Ramada Inn at 8AM and headed north to Burlington to pick up Papa Bear at the airport. As air travel is today, his flight was 45 minutes late. We still had plenty of time to drive over to the Emily Proctor Trail where we started hiking at 1:38. The weather was sunny, warm, & dry. Quite a change from yesterday. We reached Breadloaf (3835') at 3:40 and then Wilson (3790') at 4:28. We retraced out steps and where back at the car at 6:25 PM. We then headed off to Little River State Park which would be our base camp for the next 4 days.
Tuesday 08-16-05, Abraham & Ellen. We drove to Lincoln Gap and started hiking at 9:35 AM. The morning was overcast. On our way up Abraham we met several people coming down from the summit. They told us they saw no views. We reached the 4006' summit at 11:15 and had limited views. Shortly after leaving the summit and heading on towards Ellen I noticed a herd path to my left. Upon investigation we found it led to an airplane wreck. It was a single engine plane. The engine was not there but most of the fuselage and wings where. We continued on and hiked over the summits of Lincoln Peak, Nancy Hanks Peak, and Cutts Peak before reaching Mt Ellen (4083') at 1:23. The ridge walk between these peaks is very nice! We headed back reaching Abraham again at 3:20. This time the views where spectacular!
We where back to the car at 5:05 PM. A most enjoyable hike!
Wednesday 08-17-05, Camels Hump & Mansfield. We started hiking the Burrows trail at 7:00 AM, reaching the summit of Camels Hump (4083') at 8:38. It was foggy & 55 degrees at the summit. I know we missed some great views from this above treeline peak. We made it back to the car at 10:08 and drove over to Underhill State Park to hike up to Mt Mansfield's Chin (4393'). We started hiking at 11:30 following a graveled road that leads to the Sunset Ridge Trail. We took a side trail to Cantlever Rock at 12:20. This is an interesting rock formation and well worth the trip. On the way we met up with several trail crew members doing rock work. We thanked them for their hard effort. We reached the summit at 1:45 PM. There where a LOT of people up on the summit. We spent some time chatting with an employee of the Green Mountain Club who was on "summit duty". Leaving the summit at 2:06 we took the Laura Cowles trail back down reaching the car at 3:45. If I where to do this loop again I'd go up the Laura Cowles trail and back down into the views via the Sunset Ridge Trail. ANOTHER great hiking day!!
Thursday 08-18-05, Jay & Big Jay. Last night at the campground we had a pleasant surprise, Skimom drove up to hike with us for a day! We all got an early start, tanked up on coffee in Stowe, and headed up north to Jay Peak (3858'). This part of Vermont is so different than the south & central portions of the state. It's so much more rural. We started hiking from Jay Pass (Rt 242) at 8:00 AM and reached the summit at 9:08. We descended from the actual summit and had a snack on the porch of the Gondola building. Papa Bear and I climbed up an access ladder onto the roof in an attempt (I guess) to see if a spectacular view would be even better from up there! Actually I can't resist climbing up firetowers and such... just seemed like the thing to do. Well we pushed on to the beginning of the "bushwhack" and Skimom led us on our way. Without a map or compass to guide her she led us across to Big Jay (3786') and right to the canister at 10:05 AM !! Amazing
We got back to the car's at 11:50. Skimom headed over to hike Mansfield while Papa Bear and I headed over to Cold Hollow to scout out some logging roads for use in tomorrows bushwack. We would all meet up again for supper later in the evening.
Friday 08-19-05, Cold Hollow Mtn. Our last day in Vermont would end with a bushwack up a "50 Finest" 3000 foot peak. We started out at 8:20 AM following an old logging road N from Rt 109 for about a half mile. We then turned NW into the slope and headed uphill to gain the long and well defined summit ridge. We followed that ridge N thru open woods reaching the summit canister (glass jar) at 10:31 AM. The last register entry was on 11-24-04 by a deer hunter. As a matter of fact several deer hunters and skiers had signed the register over the years! Those local Vermont boys are some tough! We left the summit at 11:00 and reached a new logging road at 12:35 within 200' of where we crossed it earlier on our way up. We followed that logging road back to the car reaching it at 12.55 PM.
Saturday 08-20-05. This morning it was up at 3:50 AM to get Papa Bear back to the airport to catch an EARLY flight back home. It started to rain as we drove to Burlington. I think he was glad to get to the airport in one piece as my driving was rather sloppy (sleepy?) at times. I returned to the campground to catch another hours sleep. The rain stopped just long enough for me to eat breakfast, break camp, pack the car, and leave. My plan for the drive home was to hike another 2 peaks along the way but the heavy rain convinced me otherwise. So what to do?, I stopped into Kittery Trading Post and bought an Altimeter! This bushwack thing has a hold on me!
