It's time for me to hit several HH peaks in Vermont. I have the Long Trail map which shows some of them but LONG (pun intended) for a trail map that includes Equinox and at least shows Dorset Peak. Any ideas? I'm resorting to DeLorme for my Stratton Maine area HH peaks, should I be doing this for VT too?

The GMC Day Hikers Guide has those

If you find DeLorme suitable for ME it should be fine for VT

USGS maps are free on the Internet from several sources

The Delorme for VT is essential, 80% of the challenge of doing vermont is finding the darn trail heads.

Green Mountain Club's Day Hiker's Guide to Vermont has maps, trail descriptions, and directions to Equinox and Dorset. We have the 5th edition from 2006 and it's been flawless so far. A 6th edition came out in 2011.

The Club also puts out a Long Trail Guide that includes maps and descriptions of summits like Breadloaf, Wilson, and Stratton.

I recommend climbing Dorset from the north, it's very scenic compared to the eroded, rutted-out routes from the south.

The Equinox Preservation Trust has a very good map of Equinox. It's available at some trailhead parking lots and online.

NatGeo has maps of the green mountains broken up into northern and southern sections. I think NatGeo used some outdated maps so I can't exactly say I am that pleased with them but they should be accurate enough to use for the HH stuff. Having said that, I have found a lot of good info on the internet, including maps for Dorset Peak that I used last winter...

Thanks for the suggestions. Will support Green Mountain Club and purchase the Day Hiker's Guide and see what I need after that. The Equinox Preservation Trust map is pretty cool. Jay, where did you find that maps of Dorset Peak? I am thinking the only snarky one I may have of the 8 I have left would be Mendon Peak. And of course, I'll check the internet for trailhead directions. Pepp

Mendon is an easy bushwhack. I have the impression it was the first bushwhack for many of us. I just followed directions from this website that I printed out. That was 10 years ago.

Dorset, ditto, I’m pretty sure. DeLorme map to find the trail head, probably the trails were marked on it, too. The main one, anyway, but I don’t really remember. I climbed Equinox and Dorset the same miserably hot July day in 2006. Got terrible cramps climbing Dorset, but recovered enough to descend without any difficulty.

Just using a google search. the maps I used were basically USGS quads but had like markings of where the various trails and roads were. The trails and roads were somewhat "rearranged' by Hurrican Irene/Sandy but they were good enough to get me where I wanted to go. i.e the north and south peaks and things like where pie plate junction was and stuff, the tar paper shack that at one point, you could drive to... I just dl'ing the images and printed them out. You couldn't possibly drive to the tar paper shack unless it's been fixed since I did it 2 winters ago...

check out those pictures there and also the "external links" You'll find some homemade maps of Dorset that worked for me...
