Although it doesn't always work out this way, sometimes a big return can be reaped on a very small investment. Recently, I did a very small hike (less than 2 miles round-trip), and it yielded what I felt was a big return in terms of views.
This trek began at the Sawyer River Rd trailhead for the Sawyer Pond Trail. After hiking on-trail for about 0.3 mile, I launched a very mild-mannered bushwhack (about 0.6 mile one-way). This whack involved trekking through some beautiful open hardwoods. It was almost more like a walk in the park than a bushwhack.
My destination was a viewpoint low down (around 2,350 ft) on the ENE end of Green's Cliff (not to be confused with Green's Ledge in the Kilkenny area). From previous experience, I knew that it wasn't necessary to go all the way to the high point on Green's Cliff in order to get views. However, I had never attempted to get views from this low down on the ridge.
Shown below are a few snapshots taken from my "low-down" destination on Green's Cliff.
(Zoomed) Sawyer Pond, Mt Tremont, Owls Cliff
Same scene as above, but NOT ZOOMED
(Zoomed) Mt Chocorua in background with tiny Birch Hill in foreground
Same scene as above, but NOT ZOOMED
Stairs Mountain and Mt Resolution
Okay, this next snapshot was NOT taken from my perch low down on Green's Cliff! It was taken on the way to the Sawyer River Road trailhead. I couldn't resist snapping this rather touristy photo of the first significant snow-cap atop Mt. Washington for this season.
