trails: signal ridge trail, carrigain notch trail, bushwack, herd path

conditions: sawyer river road open and dry. trails generally dry and frozen ground. some patchy ice on signal ridge trail early on. we left carrigain notch trail a short distance back down from the well known big rock heading roughly northwest and had nice open woods up to the ridge running south from vose spur. once on the ridge there were many faint herd paths to start then a more distinct herd path higher up that was disturbed in spots by blowdown. footing was dry and generally good even in the very steep woods above the scree field. summit marked with sign and canister. lid was frozen on and took a little coaxing to get off. the crossing of carrigain brook was a straight forward rock hop today.

equipment: navigational tools of your choice.

comments: a great day to be in the woods. fanstastic views from the talus field on vose spur and comfortable hiking temps all day. congratulations to mark (silverfox) on his completion of the ne100 highest. thanks to mark, tim, val and sabrina for a nice hike.
