Trails were great to the Rock. We went 50' and took a left at the birch log onto an obvious path (drainage ditch) which ascended and then rather quickly then disappeared in a mess of blow downs. We headed right and up through the woods, picking our way up to the talus field, finding a herd path (crying for joy) and losing it (this scenario repeated throughout the morning). Talus field has three cairns: one where we emerged, one where the summit herd path begins, and one in the middle easily seen by both directions (though the cairns are tricky to spot in a field of rock!). The summit herd path is well defined for the most part. At times we were stopped, scouting around for the right way, particularly when we left the summit canister to head down (took a few minutes to figure out which way we came). On the way down we easily found the herd path below the talus field but also spent time picking our way around trees, looking for the right way, or at least an easier way.

Register books in the summit canister are drenched. We had them out in the sun for a while to dry, and put a dry note pad in a plastic bag - but a new notepad is needed for this canister.

Special equipment needed: safety glasses, long pants, reliable boots (treacherous footing on the talus field).

After a wonderful weekend enjoying the logging roads of Maine and easy bushwhack to Cupsuptic Snow, we were surprised at how challenging this hike is. A good portion of the trip below the talus field was steep going, with stealth rotted ground swallowing legs on the descent. Bugs weren't too bad and all in all a beautiful day to be enjoying that spectacular view on the talus field.
