Little Bear, Cantdog, Pat, and Audrey set out from the Sawyer River Road parking lot at 9:10. We wore Tevas, fully expecting to have to ford high water, but there was none. The entire day was beautiful and mostly sunny, except for summit clouds.
Proceeding along the Carrigain Notch Trail, we passed the mouth of the dry brookbed where Pat and Audrey had started from the first time they scaled Vose, about 15 years ago. We were in search of Bob & Geri's boulder in the trail, which promised to be the start of a herd path. We indeed found it, found the herd path on the left about 20 feet along the trail beyond the boulder, and started up. We lost the path after about a half hour, but we continued to the ridge which overlooks the brook valley below Signal Ridge. There we encountered a herd path which took us all the way to the summit. It was easy to follow most of the time, with some detours necessary to avoid blowdowns. It was very steep in spots (it felt nearly vertical!) and was wet and muddy as well, causing one of us to belly flop in the mud and slide backward a few feet. Luckily nobody was watching.
The return trip retraced our route down the ridge, where cantdog continued along the ridge above the brook. The others followed the herd path as it swung left towards the trail and Mt. Lowell. It disappeared after a few minutes and we were left with a hobble-bush-whack.
Time to ascend: 4 hours.
Descent: 3 hours
In the parking lot we set up our chairs and enjoyed some beer and wine before setting out for home. We were happy to have a surprise guest, Sir Edmund, who had just climbed Mt. Carrigain, probably in record time. He enjoyed a Tuckerman's before setting off to collect some friends who were due to pop out of woods after a Presi traverse.
