trails: sawyer river road, signal ridge trail, carrigain notch trail, bushwack

conditions: sawyer river road is clear and dry. signal ridge trail a mix of dry trail and mud with very minor patchy snow to carrigain notch trail. carrigain notch trail was mostly dry then some snow in the last bit before we took off for the bushwack heading nw to pick up the south running ridge on vose spur. some snowy stretches and patches of ice on the ridge below the talus slope then clear woods through the steep pitch below the summit. some snow around the summit area. multiple herd paths along the way particularly clear above the talus field. heading towards carrigain there was snow to the col and talus slope just above which continued on the steep initial pitch up the intermediate summit. we eventually went to snowshoes then had to take them off before putting them back on just past the intermediate summit. continous and substantial snow from there to the summit of carrigain. the woods from vose to carrigain were generally moderately open with some tight stretches and blowdown. descending signal ridge trail there was pretty full snow coverage all the way down through the long slab along the ridge then just patchy down to the hardwoods. the open section of signal ridge was melted out. the crossing of carrigain brook could be rock hopped with care. most of the often dry brook beds on carrigain notch trail were running as well and were pretty easily rock hopped.

equipment: as noted above we used snowshoes at elevation on the bushwack. they are also still a great idea if going to carrigain via signal ridge trail as the is still plenty of snow up there.

comments: a gorgeous day for this trip. i've wanted to bushwack between vose spur and carrigain for a while now and it was actually a real enjoyable hike between the peaks. the talus slope that's tucked away in the vose/carrigain col had fantastic views. the small sub alpine area below the summit of carrigain was pretty impressive as well. thanks to cynthia and wayne for an awesome day.
