Trails: Signal Ridge, Carrigain Notch, Bushwack, Herd Trails

Conditions: Pristine

Equipment: None, other than your Fall gear

Summary: This was absolutely an incredible day in the Whites with absolutely perfect conditions. Signal Ridgle & Carrigain Notch trails were perfect (little ice and/or mud). As we approached the "Big Rock", where you are suppose to cut off left, we took a rest, (I ate a whoopie pie), and looked for what appeared to be a cut-off. We believe it is about 20-25 yds past the gig rock where there was a white birch log and a small, and I mean small piece of cloth on a branch. We hiked up a gully which was fairly open for about 1/4 - 1/3 of a mile and then turned right and headed for the ridge. You had no idea if you really were correct, other than your compasss points and every so often we would see an orange ribbon on a tree. We got to the slide and again had no idea where to enter the woods on the other side to hook up with the herd path so we hiked as far as we could, saw an old shirt so we entered (can't say this was right, well can probably confirm this was not right). We traveleled up what we thought was a herd path (Bob laughed all the way up), until we got near the top and we saw to our left what looked to be a better herd path. We eventually got to the summit, celebrated and returned down, this time selecting what was probably the herd path we should have traveled on the way up, (Bob laughed all the way down). As we got closer to slide (we could see it through the woods), the trail kinda died out with some blowdowns but we excited to a completely different section (much lower on the the slide). We placed a small cairn there and Kyle retrieved the old shirt and tied it onto a branch. Anyone going up should look for this! After lunch we headed down and never really caught the same bushwack as the way up. We headed for our designated compass point but ended on Carrigain Notch Trail somewhat closer to the intersection with Signal Ridge. Overall, a 7 hour day with about 45 mins of hanging out at summit and on the slide.

Comments: Congrats to James as he is on a mission to hike the NE Highest 100. Somehow he convinced us to come along and we are all glad he did since this was a fun hike.
