Interestingly, I went up Signal Ridge and Carrigain Notch trails and bushwhacked Vose Spur earlier in the same day as 1Happy Hiker. Views from the talus field were excellent, although it was a quite a bit cloudier early in the day. While the herd path is fairly obvious in some places, it's certainly not in others. After losing the path on my descent below the talus field, I got drawn north of the standard route. While this was initially quite open and easy, lower down it became a steep and spruce filled thrash I wouldn't recommend. My attempts to contour back south were consistently met by walls of spruce. I did find a discarded water bottle along this descent, so I'm not apparently not alone in having been sucked into this trap.

Regarding the blowdowns on Signal Ridge Trail, as an AMC trail adopter, I have to mention that 3 of the blowdowns, located approximately 1 minute, 30 minutes and 35 minutes up the trail from the trailhead appear rather dangerous. All can be walked under, but the broken segments appear very tenuously perched. These might require professional involvement for safe removal. Does anyone here know if this trail has an adopter or who maintains it (AMC or Forest Service)?
