trails: great gulf trail, gulfside trail, cog service road, nelson crag trail, auto road, huntington ravine trail, alpine garden trail, wamsutta trail

conditions: great gulf trail in good condition, minimal blowdown to wilderness specs. footing often damp which necessitated care on ledgy areas. past spaulding lake the trail is pretty flooded in one section below the headwall. a fair amount of water running on or near the trail on the lower part of the headwall ascent which made the going slippery in spots. blazing continues to fade on this route though we noted some along the way. occasional small cairns. the evidence of irene is certainly there in the middle section of the ascent, but does not hinder travel. dry conditions up on washingtons cone and down to the wamstutta trail which was wet and slick up high in the trees. it then dried out a bit on the steep descent and was well brushed with no blowdown. one steep ledgy drop required care. numerous significant water crossings on the great gulf trail were all hoppable today with little difficulty.

equipment: nothing in particular.

comments: a great day for this rugged loop. i had not been on the great gulf headwall for many years and now i remember why i liked it so much back then. awesome views and such a wild and beautiful area. wamsutta has some amazing scenery as well with close up views into the gulf and to the northern presidentials. pretty stunning. thanks to jeremy for a great hike.
