Though I've never seen it, I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that its leftover from the firetower days. I wouldn't drink from it without a filter, if at all.

There is a well at the old Fire Warden's Cabin site. It is usually reliable as far as being full, but certainly not for purity. I would certainly use a high end filter in this area if not also iodining your take. About 20 years ago a dead rabbit was found in the well and was of course then "OFF LIMITS" for quite some time.If it were me I would carry more H2O than to use this well even with filtration.
If you are looking for the Well it is high on the mountain. After entering the woods once you have traversed Signal Ridge the Old Fire Warden's Cabin site is on your Right about a 1/4 mile or so. Facing the site the Well is on your Left.

I was up there this past Saturday and like skiguy mentioned it is there on the right side before your final push to the tower.
The well has plenty of water in it and someone has tied a plastic milk jug so you can actually fill up if you want. However as the others mention I would make sure you have the water filtered before drinking.
I posted some pictures of this trip under Trip Reports (Signal Ridge to Carrigain) and there is a picture of the well.

Happy Trails!
