This was my wife's first 4K since her last 4K. What I mean by this is last August we did Waumbek (her last 4K). Her knee was tender from the day before when she banged it coming down Caps Ridge on an absolutely perfect (except for the knee bang) day on Jefferson. Crystal blue skies and temps that only required T-shirt and shorts. Because her knee hurt we decided to not do Cabot (the plan for the next day) and come home (cue suspenseful music as something bad is about to happen). After a day of rest she decided to test the knee by doing a short run in our neighborhood. Long story somewhat shorter, she stepped off the shoulder and broke her 5th Metatarsal near the growth plate. After 8wks in a cast and rehab, she finally has the go ahead to resume hiking (and even running) so she wanted to get out and hike! She chose Waumbek (first 4K since broken foot) to put the evil spirits at rest! We left about 8:30 and used microspikes the entire way. The trail is hard packed (be aware that just off the monorail the trail drops off fast). We saw the remains of a grouse at the beginning of the trail and lot's of tracks of other critters. The temps were comfortable and she (and I) had a great time.
We saw 11 other hikers and 2 dogs. All but two were in spikes or barebooting. Some new snow from about Starr King over to Waumbek. And a bit of drifting.
A great day out and an even better day back on the trails.:D
