7/14/2006 Mount Waumbek 37/48
I woke up Friday morning with the weather report stating that we were headed into a record-breaking heat wave. My wife, her sister, and mom as well as the kids were headed to the beach. The thought of lying on a towel as you slowly (or not so slowly) cooked held no appeal to me. I opted to head North instead.
I had been saving Waumbek for a rainy day, but a sunny day would have to do. Barely poking over 4000 feet and way down on the list of the 48, I hadn’t expected a lot from this mountain- way up in the North Country. As it turned out, I really enjoyed the Starr King Trail. It headed up almost immediately and was a steady climb for most of the first part of the hike. It leveled off somewhat and went through some really lush green sections. This kept the temps down, which was much appreciated on this hot day.
I made the summit of Mt. Starr King in good time and checked out the old camp there, where the old fireplace is, thinking it was Waumbek I turned and started down. (I hadn’t read my trail guide completely) I had my doubts so I checked the map and decided to follow the trail beside the fireplace, but it headed down. Surely it wasn’t the way. I followed the trail anyway, and was pleased when it started to rise. Shortly after that I made it to Waumbek.
I did have to get back to Manchester, so I hurried back down to my car.
As it turned out, Waumbek was a very pleasant walk in the woods. The trail consisted manly of dirt! What a nice change from some of the rock and boulder hopping hikes I had done recently.
