Canton, NY. Avatar: Mt. Washington in Winter:
I parked by the last house before the t/h because the plow had left a ridge of snow across the road there. I looked at the house and it seemed like nobody was there recently, so it seemed ok to park there. When I parked, the car was in 1st gear. As I was sitting there, it started to roll back, so I put on the parking brake. I also took a wedge shaped piece of fire wood (my Adirondack parking brake) from the trunk and put it under the RF tire for extra measure. When I got back to the car, it was gone! At least I didn't find it wedged in my windshield. But why would someone take it?
The most icy part of the whole day was that section going up to the t/h parking, and the parking area itself. Once on the trail, there was a little ice under the snow, but not bad.
I was barebooting. It was pretty firm underfoot all the way. I may have broken through 5 times, so it was softer than E. Osceola the day before. As I got further and higher, I wondered when I'd need the crampons. Finally I came to a pretty steep pitch which wouldn't really need them, but I figured I would soon, and if I waited, I might have to put them on in the wind. Once I clawed my way up that pitch, I was on the summit of Starr King. Being unfamiliar with this trail, I had pictured some steep final ascents, so I kept the crampons on all the way to Waumbek. They weren't needed.
there were no views because it was so cloudy. I was still pretty high up at sunset, which I noticed through the trees. I didn't see the sun, but there was a vertical reddish pillar of light, and where some of that light found its way through the trees, there were tiny patches of glowing red snow. A nice effect.
No significant water crossings.
Crampons and snow shoes not needed.
Gorham got about 3" of wet snow Thursday night into Friday (1/17-1/18). Snow advisory lasts til 1PM Friday, but as of 10:30AM it had stopped snowing.
