Trail was nice and hard after some cool temps last night. I used my spikes the whole way. It could be barebooted but I like some traction under my feet. Lots of snow melt down low. Up to about 3000 ft. some bare ground. Several blowdowns just past the spring. Trail over to Waumbek is pretty much the way Silverfox's prior post describes with all kinds of holes (mostly snowshoe and moose posthole tracks), except everything was hard this morning and easy to walk on. Carried my snowshoes on my pack but didn't use them. It wouldn't have done anything except expend energy. Just stay in the tracks. One fellow passed me by going up this morning with no gear at all. No pack, no water, no traction, no hat, no jacket, in fact he was wearing shorts and low cut trail runners. I just said, as he went by, that he looked quite comfortable and that I hope he wouldn't have to spend the night in the woods. After the wind started howling he was on his way back down. One other lady heading over to Starr King this morning. Finished about 11:30 and by that time the sun was out and the snow, what little there is down low was getting soft. These conditions subject to change after the mess we're supposed to get tomorrow. Thanks to Silverfox for the parking tip.
