The news (and I expect the winter sports industry) are really scratching for any hope of snow, the current long range forecasts are still iffy but the two models seem to be coastal or somewhat inland but looks like the northern whites will be on the fringes Saturday night into Sunday. I noticed Great Glen trails was running their guns yesterday morning along RT 16 to give the illusion of snow. The local snowmobile rental places have no signs of life.

I went out for a short hike Monday, we’d gotten 3-4” of really light, fluffy stuff over the weekend and it was still snowing. Driving back out the logging road I saw a single snowmobile track right down the middle of the road. I get it, I brought snowshoes on all my hikes over the holiday weekends except for Monday “just in case” there was more snow if I got up to higher altitudes. But with so little snow and the ground not really frozen (and most likely not going to be now that it’s insulated) riding the trails will just make ruts, holes, and detours when other riders go around obstacles.

I have been bare booting everything - no snowshoes, no spikes. Only an inch or two in Pinkham and Crawford. But at least a return to some colder temps. Last I checked, no snow machine trails open anywhere, even near the border. And other than a tiny loop at Jackson XC, no XC anywhere. Looks like Sunday storm will stay south.
