West/East Rattlesnakes via OBP, Ridge Trails

Date of Hike: Sun 1/10/10

Trail Conditions: Old Bridle Path was a highway of hard-packed snow to overlook of Squam Lake but with surprisingly few people. Ridge Trail to E. Rattlesnake had been visited but much fluffier though. Plenty of snow with only a few icy patches.

Special Equipment: barebooting is fine to W. Rattlesnake overlook but beyond that snowshoes are best.

Comments: I'd never done the ridge trail over to E. Rattlesnake and it was lovely -- gave a view of Squam Lake the entire time, and nicely sheltered from the winds. While this may be a wimpy hike to some (3.8 mi RT/1000' elev. gain), a late start and the back problems of one of our party made the FTFers not practical. This is a favorite gem worth revisiting. Additional side trails through the col could allow even longer meanderings. Great new parking lot right at the OBP trailhead so you no longer have to park on the road or across the street -thank you, Squam Lakes Association!
