trails: hancock notch trail, bushwhack

conditions: hancock notch trail dry. walked for about 2 minutes then hit the woods to pick up the ridge running to west huntington. woods were consistently scrappy to the summit with some pretty thick going between the sub bump and the summit proper. i can often get away without sleeves on most off trail hikes this time of year, but was forced into sleeves as i was getting pretty scratched up. i hugged the southeast side of the ridge line much of the way to attempt to get some cliff top views. found a few good ones, but it wasn't always easy to safely get out to some of the better ones. i had little trouble finding the recognized high point though the going is thick over much of the summit area. took a bearing almost directly west from the summit and descended through mostly decent woods (steep up high) back to the hancock notch trail about .25 from the trailhead. crossed some interesting old roads along the way.

equipment: navigational tools of your choice.

comments: i have looked forward to the this one for a while and was waiting for a good view day with dry woods. today was perfect. some great views to osceola, kancamagus and kanc notch, the sandwich range and other huntington summits. a real unique look at the "horseshoe" along the kanc. found the best cliff top access to be on the sub bump, though did find a nice spot below the summit to the east that had a good view spot as well. great to be out.
