On our continuing quest to stand on every site where a fire tower stands, once stood or was proposed brought us to West Magalloway Mountain in Pittsburg, NH. #60 of the 92 towers for us. This was another bushwhack to the top summit as there are no trails. The tower that once stood on this peak was just temporary to cover a blind spot until a taller tower was built on Magalloway Mountain.
We started from the trailhead for Magalloway Mountain and headed out up the Bobcat Trail. We started our bushwhack shortly after heading up the trail. We headed down the side of Magalloway Mountain for a while and there was a lot of mud and water. It was the type of mud that just grabs hold of your boot and makes the sucking noise when you pull it back out. We were just in a bad area and there was no way to avoid it. We stepped on downed branches and higher spots whenever we could. Eventually we made it to where the land leveled out.
At the start of the ascent up West Magalloway we were faced with a wall of impenetrable pines. We decided to continue walking around to the left until we found a spot we could start to climb. The going was tough, we kept hitting areas where it seemed as though the brush was just trapping our feet. There were easier paths to choose from, but we had the pup with us, so we had to make choices she could make. Heck at times we were letting her lead the way. LOL
It’s not a long bushwhack and soon enough, we made it to the summit. We found the canister and logged in, then took in the views. The bugs were relentless, so we decided not to spend too much time up there and headed back down. We did bushwhack out using a different path which was easier.
When we signed the log, we noticed, that someone had said it was an easy bushwhack to the summit. They must have taken a different route than we did. LOL We ended up doing 2.2 miles round trip for the summit.
