trails: bobcat trail, bushwack, coot trail, overlook trail

conditions: the white mountain guide has good directions to the trailhead, but it is basically magalloway road for about 5.3 miles from rt. 3 then right onto a road marked for magalloway summit tower to around 8 miles total. magalloway road was in great shape. the access road to the trailhead was a bit rougher, but ok in a passenger car with a bit of care. as i drove back out after the hike i found the first .25 or so of the road had been graded while i was out there. it looks like they will be grading and raking the road out which should make access even better. from the parking area i followed the bobcat trail until it turned a headed up the main peak of magalloway and from there i started my bushwack following a moose path along an overgrown old road towards the magalloway/west magalloway col. lots of tall hobblebush and swampy footing and in one such area i had a nice close encounter with a bull moose. from the col i headed directly up west peak, mostly on moose paths, to the summit which had been cleared over in the past and had good views. i backtracked picking up the old road on the way back out and followed it back to the bobcat trail. the trail was in great shape up to its junction with the coot trail shortly below the summit. i followed the overlook trail from behind the cabin to the cliffs overlooking the large talus slope on the east side of the mountain. pretty impressive. the firetower was in great shape and had great views in all directions. the coot trail was in good shape on the descent. a bit loose in spots, but nice overall.

equipment: nothing in particular.

comments: along with wanting to use this nice day to visit some peaks along the border i also wanted to get up magalloway. the summit didn't disappoint with views down to the presidentials, the high peaks in the rangeley area of maine and to northern vt. great looks at all the nearby peaks and lakes as well. i spent the better part of an hour on top trying to take it all in. i got lucky to have such clear views. had a nice visit with a moose on the way to west magalloway as we quietly contemplated each other for about half a minute before going our separate ways. such a nice area. great day up north.
