It seems like forever since I've been able to get up north and hike my Daks. So I am at a loss as to the current conditions. Not even sure what I'll be hiking tomorrow (Sunday 30th) but thinking of Marcy, Wright, Giant - I don't know something -- anything! But curious about the conditions up top so I make sure to bring the correct gear. After seeing the weather in Lk Placid on the tube earlier this week (wow they got dumped on) I have no idea if there's snow - how much , or just maybe some ice. So any input you have will def be appreiciated. I'm hoping just crampons - I can't imagine snowshoes yet! Yikes.

No first hand or up-to-date knowledge, but on Oct. 26 someone posted on ADKforum that they called the ADK Loj weather phone and they reported 8" at the Loj, 12" at 2200 ft., and 12-24" above 2200 ft. Also reported was that people were skiing Whiteface road on the 25th. You might try contacting the Loj:

Fax and Weather: 518-523-3518 E-mail: [email protected]

I'll post a report after tomorrow's hike, but I've heard these two reports from seasoned hikers in the past couple of days. "Cascade, couldn't summit! Pushed through thigh deep snow until could push no farther. No snowshoes..."

And a multiple winter rounder forgot his snowshoes and was turned back heading to Big Slide after the Second Brother. Again, reports of snow over the knees and rough going.

Woo Hoo! Psyched to plow through deep stuff tomorrow!

The Adirondack Ski Touring Council has this on their website as of 10/28:

"Very wet underneath and many trees bent down due to the heavy, wet snow. Some will recover as the snow melts, but travel may be harder this winter as a result."

"There has been snow on the summits for over a week now, and Tuesday night and Wednesday produced 10-12" of new, but very heavy wet, snow. Temperatures will rise into the fifties in the valleys by the weekend, but the Whiteface Highway and Marcy Dam Truck Trail will be skiable this weekend. The Highway has already been skied and is broken out to the Castle with two feet reported at that elevation. By Saturday, there will likely be snowmobile tracks from the weather station personnel"

"Snow Depth at 4,000 ft.: 2-3 feet"
