Hello everyone, I am one of those people with the bad habit of browsing forums for years for the treasure trove of knowledge, but never gets around to registering. Well, I figured I would register, so here I am.
Captain Slow is the trail name I chose for myself because of my leisurely hiking pace that averages about 2MPH. I get passed by people in a huge rush on the trails so often that I figured it was a good name. It is also a bit of a homage to my favorite automotive journalist James May.
I only got started with hiking in the Summer of 2022 when I went on a solo trip to Waterville Valley NH to relive some fond memories of childhood summers spent there in 1989 and 1990. I did a hike to Lower Greeley Pond and East Pond and enjoyed it very much. I then went home and figured the itch had been scratched. But it wasn’t. I immediately felt drawn back, so I went back a couple of months later.
Since then, The White Mountains have become a happy place for me where I can truly feel at peace, and I have hiked roughly 400 miles there as of October 2024. I’ve done extensive hikes all around Waterville Valley and the western side of the Sandwich Range. I have done a lot of hiking through the Zealand Notch area and the Northern Pemi and on down to the Sawyer Pond area and its surrounding trails. I have only done 1 of the 4,000 footers so far, Mt. Osceola from the Tripoli Rd trailhead. I am hoping for more, but completing the 4,000 footers list isn’t a goal.
At the moment I am just a solo day hiker, usually covering anywhere between 8-12 miles on a single hike, but I would like to get into overnighting as there are places I want to see which are beyond the reasonable range of a day hike. I am also interested in meeting up with experienced bushwhackers and exploring long abandoned trails. The Lost Pass is also on my bucket list.
Anyway, hope you all have a great day and great next hike wherever that may be.
