For the first mile, the Dicey's Mill trail seemed to have tracks from just before the New Year's Day snow storm, but maybe they were from 1/2, and had already blown over by the time I started. (Noon. )
The Ferncroft parking area wasn't plowed, but the snow was fluffy and had been tracked by a couple of vehicles, so I got in w/ my fwd, snow-tired sub-compact. By the time I got out, the area was well plowed.
I started with snowshoes. About 4" snow at first in recent tracks, then 6" when those ended. I was sinking down 8" at elevation, sometimes as much as a foot.
There was only one major stream crossing, and it was a bit...shall I say...Dicey I crossed on a narrow, snow covered trunk, but there were other nearby spots where it seemed possible to cross on rocks.
I went to Whiteface first. No other tracks seen until just before the summit. Those tracks were made the same day I hiked. I don't know which trail they used. I went back to Passaconaway. There were no fresh tracks seen anywhere on that peak.
There were a few signs near the summit, including one pointing towards the summit. I followed that about 100 yards until the trail seemed to end. I then sought out a couple of high spots, but didn't see a sign. It was already 9PM, so maybe I didn't shine my lamp in the right spot. Is this summit not well marked?
EQUIPMENT: Snowshoes and gaiters necessary. Crampons or any other traction devices (except for cleats on snowshoes) not needed.
