Since I bailed last minute on the Gathering I decided that if Sunday was nice weather then I needed to get out somewhere. We decided on Whiteface via the McCrillis trail since none of us had gone up that way before.

Our original plan was to loop over towards Ferncroft via the McCrillis Path, then up Blueberry Ledge and down McCrillis, but there are signs at the trailhead basically saying that the McCrillis Path is impassible due to recent logging on private land. Instead we went up and down McCrillis Trail which is quite nice, with some great views along the way, some scrambling over wet sheer rocks, and a stretch of unrelenting uphill. Saw one other person on the way up, no one on the way down, great day.

One stream crossing was a little interesting, there was some mud and water along the way but nothing too bad. The slabs could be interesting in the wet, or perhaps wetter. Saw some snakes, startled a group of grouse, and met up with one wild turkey.

Oops, it's not a secret anymore. Nice trail here, particularly if you don't like crowds. I recall being baffled when the trail bent back SE above the ridge beyond fork with Flat Mt. Trail...later I realized it was just linking up with the former route, now truncated at private lands.

As usual, nice pix, Mr. Metsky...you put me right back there....

McCrillis in winter?

Dave-
I've been up the McCrillis Trail twice. The first time was on a winter conditioning hike the day after Christmas with an AMC group. We were supposed to be carrying everything that you needed for a winter hike - the temps were in the 60's. Needless to say, we did a lot of shedding! The rocky ledges were neat!

The other time was on a trip up to East Sleeper in the winter! The brook crossing was much easier then, as it was all covered over with ice. Nice trail and area!

Enjoyed your photos!:)
