Whiteface (NY) Auto Road, March 5

Audrey, Pat and I are planning a ski/snowshoe trip up the Auto Road on Saturday, March 5. Plan on a start around 8:30 from near the toll house. We'll probably be staying at the Ark Trail Inn (thanks Neil) near Upper Jay, I've reserved two rooms there for the 4th and 5th. The hike up the road is about 5 miles one way. The climb, grade-wise, is easy, but steady. Elevation gain about 2700'. There are some excellent view points at a number of places. Skis and/or snowshoes will be required on the road portion. The final climb from the Castle, at the end of the road, is entirely on stairs and open rock and could require crampons as well. Another option is to leave the road and take the trail to the summit from the Wilmington turn about .4 miles from the top. It's still a bit far off to know what the conditions will be, but it's winter in the mountains. About the only thing you know for sure about conditions is what they were not what they will be. Be prepared for anything!!

Still a go

This hike is still on for Saturday the 6th. There will be 5 or 6 of us.

Conditions should be pretty good with all the snow recently. The forecast is for partly cloudy skies, high in the teens higher up, not too windy.
