Date of Hike: 2/23/08
Trail Conditions: Fresh snow cover from Fri. night storm made trail finding tricky in several spots near summit of Whiteface and along Rollins Trail. (But I overtook an AMC group at the Blueberry Ridge trailhead where it leaves the road so it should be well traveled. Not sure if anyone followed my tracks on Rollins.)
A number of trees down on Blueberry Ledge and plenty of lean-overs on Rollins. I only recall one step over on Dicey Mill Trail in which I kicked off the ‘pokies’.
Blazes are at foot level on Rollins and the canopy is in your face (fun with fresh snow ).
Water crossings were a non-issue.
Special Equipment Required: I had no problems with snowshoes (Atlas 12’s) the whole route, even on the ledges of Whiteface.
Comments: I knew an AMC group was supposed to be out there and another group from RoT planned to do Passaconaway with some continuing to Whiteface. With the fresh snowcover I expected some trail breaking but after I passed the AMC group at the start I was on my own until I reached the Dicey Mill Trail. It took me almost as long to cross over on Rollins as it did to climb Whiteface! Seeing Dicey Mill tracked and no more snow on the trees was SWEET! I’ve done most trails on and around Whiteface and Passaconaway but this was my first time crossing Rollins. Nice trail. Saw no one until back at the road.
